Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa, first planned as a parish church in 1839, became cathedral of the new Catholic Diocese of Bytown in 1847 and a basilica in 1879. Its twin spires, Nincheri stained-glass windows and carved sanctuary reflect an exceptional design inspired by the French Gothic Revival, integrating classicism and French-Canadian church architecture.
