The Victoria Memorial Museum in Ottawa, built from 1905 to 1911, was the first purpose-built federal museum in Canada, the culmination of decades of effort by the Geological and Natural History Survey. When completed in 1911 it housed the National Gallery and the Survey’s collections, and it was a leader in new exhibit techniques.
