Shoal Tower in Kingston’s harbour was built by the British government in 1846–1847 as one of four Martello towers, with the Market Battery, to reinforce Kingston’s defences against an anticipated American threat during the Oregon Crisis. It is part of the Kingston Fortifications, linked to the town’s military importance and the Great Lakes–Rideau Canal route.

Scope & context

The tower and Kingston’s defences, not the Rideau Canal itself (see CA-K092).
