In 1942, German submarines U-513 and U-518 made two deadly torpedo attacks on Bell Island, Newfoundland, a vital iron-ore mining and shipping centre. The attacks damaged the Scotia pier, sank four ships and killed Allied sailors, bringing the war home to Newfoundlanders.

Scope & context

The 1942 attacks, not the Battle of the Atlantic as a whole (see CA-K102).
