Clifford Sifton and settlement of the Prairies
Clifford Sifton, a lawyer, politician and principal owner of the Manitoba Free Press, was Laurier’s Minister of the Interior from 1896 to 1905. He was chiefly responsible for the plan to populate the Prairies with farmers through immigration, and earlier in the Manitoba cabinet he helped reach the compromise on the schools question.
