About Citizen.ca

Q & A

What is the difference between Citizen.ca and Wikipedia?

Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia covering subjects from around the world. Citizen.ca focuses on Canadian knowledge and its connection to Canadian identity and Canadian spirit.

Citizen.ca organizes knowledge into concise, individually referenced items. Each item brings together a summary, cited sources, photograph credits and a transparent review status. Readers can consult the evidence, report concerns and see when an item’s factual accuracy has been challenged. Public APIs and downloads also make the collection available to search engines, AI agents and other digital tools.

Citizen.ca complements Wikipedia and other reference sources. Its purpose is to assemble, organize, verify against cited sources and preserve a dependable Canadian knowledge base. “Verified” describes the source-checking process; it does not mean an item is infallible.

Some knowledge items on Citizen.ca provide little detail. How are they useful?

A brief item can answer a specific question: what something is, what happened, when it happened or why it matters to Canada. Its value lies in a clear, carefully bounded statement supported by identifiable sources. Readers can follow those sources for more detail, while digital tools can retrieve and reference the individual item.

Brevity should not come at the expense of understanding. An item needs enough context to explain its significance and avoid misleading impressions. Where a subject requires more explanation, Citizen.ca can include longer content on the opened item.

Citizen.ca is a pilot collection, and some entries need further development. We welcome reports identifying missing context, useful sources or details that would make an item more informative.
