Assiniboine College began in February 1961 as the Brandon Vocational Training Centre in Manitoba. It became Assiniboine Community College in December 1969, when the province’s technical vocational schools became community colleges.

McGill University is a public university in Montréal, founded in 1821. Its history includes Ernest Rutherford’s research on radioactivity, carried out at McGill before his Nobel Prize.

British Columbia’s legislature established the University of British Columbia through a new University Act in 1908. The university opened in temporary facilities in Vancouver in 1915.

Vanier College, a publicly funded English-language CEGEP in Montréal, opened on September 8, 1970, welcoming close to 1,400 students in its first cohort. It is named for General Georges P. Vanier, soldier, diplomat and Governor General of Canada.

In 1968 the Collège de Drummondville became the first institution to offer college-level teaching in Drummondville, a year after the CEGEPs were created, with about 500 students. In 1972 the colleges of Drummondville, Saint-Hyacinthe and Sorel were grouped as the Collège régional Bourgchemin, a regional experiment that ended in 1980.
