University Canada West was established in 2004 in Vancouver. Its university programs focus on business and technology and are offered in person and online.

Université TÉLUQ began in 1972 as an experimental “Télé-université” project to make university studies accessible to as many people as possible. It offered its first course in 1974, an introduction to co-operatives created with Desjardins, and has devoted itself entirely to distance education.

The University of Ottawa began as the College of Bytown, founded in 1848 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate as a bilingual Catholic college where students studied in English and French. Renamed the College of Ottawa, it received university status by royal charter in 1866 and a pontifical charter in 1889.

The University of Guelph was established in 1964 from the Ontario Agricultural College, the Ontario Veterinary College and the Macdonald Institute. The agricultural college traces its origins to the Ontario School of Agriculture and Experimental Farm, opened in May 1874.

A $900,000 bequest from Senator William McMaster supported the establishment of McMaster University in Toronto on April 23, 1887. Teaching began in 1890 in arts and theology.

Université Sainte-Anne was founded on September 1, 1890, by Father Gustave Blanche and the Eudist Fathers of the Congregation of Jesus and Mary. It is the only French-language post-secondary institution in Nova Scotia.

Saint Mary’s University traces its beginnings to 1802, when the Reverend Edmund Burke taught young men at the Glebe House in Halifax. The boys’ school grew into a college and then a university, and received degree-granting status from the Nova Scotia House of Assembly in 1841.

Mount Saint Vincent was established in Halifax in 1873 by the Sisters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul. It provided higher education for women and girls at a time when their educational opportunities were limited.

Memorial University College was founded in St. John’s in 1925 to commemorate Newfoundlanders who died in the First World War. Its institutional history also traces the development of higher education in Newfoundland to the Council of Higher Education, established in 1893.

The University of Northern British Columbia was officially created in June 1990, when the BC legislature passed the UNBC Act. The modern campaign began in January 1987, when three Prince George residents, Tom Steadman, Charles McCaffrey and Bryson Stone, each invited 10 people to a meeting about a northern university, and 40 came.

Algoma University was established in 1965. It is located on the former Shingwauk Indian Residential School site in Sault Ste. Marie. Its special mission includes cross-cultural learning between Indigenous communities and other communities in Northern Ontario.

The Collège d’enseignement général et professionnel François-Xavier-Garneau was created in August 1969 from the Collège des Jésuites, the École normale Mérici and the École normale Laval, starting with 550 students. In 2012 it chose to call itself a cégep and adopted Garneau as its key name; it honours the historian François-Xavier Garneau.
