Ezra Butler Eddy, born in Vermont, came to the Chaudière Falls in 1851 and started a small hand-operated match factory. He grew into a lumber magnate and maker of wooden goods, by the 1880s was Canada’s largest match producer and also made wood pulp, and in 1890 opened an up-to-date paper mill, helping make the Chaudière area a major industrial centre.
