Joseph Casavant left blacksmithing at 27 to study music and became a builder of musical instruments, producing his first church organ in his Saint-Hyacinthe shop in 1840. By his retirement in 1866 Casavant organs were in demand throughout eastern Canada, and under his sons Claver and Samuel, Casavant Frères won an international reputation.

Scope & context
