Reader Rock Garden in Calgary is an Arts and Crafts-style alpine rockery laid out on a steep hillside by William R. Reader, the city’s parks superintendent from 1913 to 1942. Its planting beds tested and showed off what could grow in Calgary, challenging the belief that southern Alberta’s climate was too harsh for agriculture and horticulture.

Scope & context

The garden and its founder, not Calgary’s park system as a whole.
