Citizen.ca

Canadian identity. Canadian spirit.

Citizen.ca exists to assemble, sort, verify, and preserve Canadian knowledge: history, places, institutions, cultural life, and the evidence that helps us understand Canadian identity.

A knowledge base for the age of AI

AI can produce an answer quickly. That does not remove the need for a durable record of what is known, where a claim comes from, and what its limits are. Our primary goal is the quality and continuity of that record, rather than attracting a large audience.

Facts, context, and more than one perspective

Canadian identity is not a single story or a quiz score. Indigenous peoples, languages, regional histories, migration, institutions, and difficult parts of the past all belong in the record. A sourced factual claim is distinct from an interpretation of what it means.

Knowledge first; education alongside

The collection uses concise knowledge items with stable reference numbers, citations, check dates, and context. Quizzes are separate educational activities linked to those items. People and digital tools can consult the records without taking a quiz.

A live pilot knowledge project

This live pilot collection provides Canadian knowledge in English and French for people and machines. The pilot continues as the collection grows. The sources and initial summaries were checked with AI assistance; they remain open to editorial correction and further review.

Citizen.ca is independent, is not a Government of Canada website, and does not claim registered charitable status. It does not collect donations in this version.

Accuracy, sources, and correction

We pursue factual accuracy through source fidelity and careful source evaluation. Faithfully representing a source is not a guarantee that its account is true. Knowledge items show their source-check status separately from any evidence-based factual-accuracy challenge. Unresolved credible concerns are marked, and review outcomes are recorded. No recorded challenge does not mean a claim is proven true.

Public data access and original-text reuse

Citizen.ca provides public REST APIs, JSON/JSONL downloads, a change/withdrawal feed and crawler discovery for human readers, search engines and AI agents. Our original summaries, long-form text and annotations explicitly marked as Citizen.ca-owned are offered under CC BY 4.0: credit the record and sources, link to the licence and identify changes. Already-granted permissions remain available to compliant users. Member-owned text without separate permission, third-party sources, photos and logos are not included in this text licence. Exported records preserve source-fidelity and factual-accuracy review distinctions; an export does not certify truth. Read the Data Access documentation.

Knowledge cards show a brief summary. Optional long-form text appears only on the opened record page and in public data exports. Source checks cover both; a change to long-form text invalidates the checked version and dependent quiz approval.
