Canada borders the Atlantic, Pacific and Arctic oceans. Discover Canada groups the country into Atlantic Canada, Central Canada, the Prairie Provinces, the West Coast and the Northern Territories.

Scope & context

Independent citizenship-study support. Read the cited official sources; this is not an official question bank or a guarantee of a test result.

More context

The Atlantic group contains Newfoundland and Labrador, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Central Canada comprises Quebec and Ontario. Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta form the Prairie group. British Columbia represents the West Coast group; Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut make up the Northern Territories.

These are the study guide’s regional groupings, not additional provinces or a claim that Canada has only one possible regional classification. Much of Canada’s southern boundary is shared with the United States. Geography, climate, Indigenous homelands and regional economies are related but different ways of understanding the country.
