Lord Monck, an Irish peer, became Governor General of British North America in 1861. During the American Civil War he worked to keep the fighting from spreading north, and as an early supporter of union he put his energy and prestige behind Confederation. His term was extended so that he could become the first Governor General of the Dominion of Canada in 1867; he retired to Ireland the next year.
